It's Gettin' Hot in Herrrrr.... Why ATL Fitness Club Recommends Spicy Foods

Is it hot in here, or is it just us?!

One great piece of nutritional information ATL Fitness Club would like to share with you is that spicy foods can help you burn more calories (aka "Achieve The Look)!

According to a recent article on a British fitness site, spicy foods help burn fat because they temporarily increase your metabolic rate .

Some spices have even been found to raise your metabolic rate by as much as 50% for up to three hours after you consume the hot stuff on your plate!

The reason spices boost your metabolic rate is because they raise your body’s temperature (you will notice this yourself when eating spicy foods), which in turn raises your heart rate.

Spices are also believed to have
thermogenic properties (which means they stimulate your body’s fat burning process).

You may have even noticed that cayenne, a red hot chili pepper, is found in many weight loss pills because it stimulates fat burning.

The overall result is that eating spicy foods can increase the amount of fat and calories you burn for a short (but beneficial) amount of time following consumption.

For more helpful nutrition tips or information about boosting your workout regimen visit our web site: ATLFitnessClub.com .

"Holy Cow!" ATL Fitness Club 's New Favorite Treat from Skinny Cow

Fighting off those occasional urges for desserts or candy bars can be difficult, especially when you're training hard & eating clean before your upcoming summer vacation...

Well ATL Fitness Club has some good news for you: You may be able to indulge every once in a while...without the added calories (or eater's remorse)!

We came across the coolest new Skinny Cow product the other day...and it's so good, we think it could actually take the place of a Kit Kat (or your favorite candy bar)!

It's called the Skinny Cow Heavenly Crisp Bar (in milk chocolate).

This terrific treat is only 110 calories, and contains just 9 grams of sugar.

So if you're looking for something fun to splurge on, give these bars a try...You can probably find them at your local grocery store (we found ours at a drug store chain in the candy section).

Mooo-ve over candy bars, ATL Fitness Club has found a new low-calorie treat!

Play That Funky Music! ATL Fitness Club 's Top 10 Workout Songs for May 2013

If you're like many of us at ATL Fitness Club ... it is IMPOSSIBLE to have a productive workout unless you have good music blaring through your Beats headphones (or ear buds for jams on your cell phone).

So the jury's out for May 2013... and we've found a list of the Top 10 Workout Songs (thanks to our friends at Run Hundred).

Here are some suggestions (based on the Top 10 list) if you're looking for new tunes to jam to in the gym or during your cardio training outdoors:

1) Arcadia by Ash

2) Alive by Krewella

3) Done by The Band Perry

4) Get Lucky by Daft Punk & Pharrell

5) Beautiful by Alex Gaudino & Mario

6) As Your Friend by Afrojack & Chris Brown

7) Pom Poms by the Jonas Brothers

8) Here's to Never Growing Up by Avril Lavigne

9) Still Into You by Paramore

10) Tonight I'm Getting Over You by Carly Rae Jepsen

Okay we'll admit it. None of the songs in this Top 10 list are currently on anyone's workout mix at ATL Fitness Club ... but as the saying goes, "to each his (or her) own!"

Honestly, we actually have these types of artists on our playlists:

-- Roy Jones Jr.

-- Tupac

-- Notorious B.I.G.

-- Justin Timberlake

-- Britney Spears (don't judge.)

But hey, do whatever it takes to ensure you have the most productive workout possible...whether it's listening to audio books, a specific station on Pandora, or even the latest  "Now That's What I Call Music!" album (there are like, hundreds of those).

No matter which genre of exercise melodies you prefer, stick to what inspires you to ultimately
" Achieve The Look ."

Cue the music!

Parabéns! Toney “ The X-Man ” Freeman Lands 2nd Place in 2013 Arnold Classic Brazil

IFBB Pro Toney “The X-Man” Freeman took home a 2nd place win from the first-ever Arnold Classic Brasil competition during the weekend.

The highly-anticipated show was held in Rio de Janeiro this year and featured IFBB Pro League men’s bodybuilding, along with a complete lineup of amateur bodybuilding events as well as a fitness expo.

This year's Arnold Classic Brasil was a joint venture between Gov. Schwarzenegger, Arnold Sports Festival co-promoter Jim Lorimer, International Federation of Body Building president Rafael Santonja, and Savaget Promotions of Sáo Paulo, Brazil.

“We [were] very excited to take the Arnold Sports Festival model to South America in 2013,” Lorimer said. “The creation of the first Arnold Classic Europe in Madrid in October 2012 proved that there was great demand worldwide for the Arnold Sports Festival concept…”

One of the most memorable highlights from the the Arnold Classic Brasil was the professional men’s bodybuilding contest, which was sanctioned by the IFBB Pro League.

World famous Toney “The X-Man” Freeman took 2nd place behind long-time fellow competitor, Brandon Curry. Rounding off the Top 5 in the competition were Johnny Jackson in 3rd, Edward Nunn in 4th, and Fred Smalls in 5th place.

The ATL Fitness Club congratulates Freeman on his latest accomplishment in Brazil… We look forward to teaming up with “The X-Man” during our pending health & fitness partnership in the near future!

Ripped Off: ATL Fitness Club 's 3 Things You Can Do to Get Ready for Summer

We've said it once before, but has it really sunk in with you...? Summer (e.g. beach) season is practically here, so it's time to look your very best in your swim trunks or bikini!
At ATL Fitness Club we, too are also planning to hit the beach (in July), so there's no better time than NOW to start preparing for the hot weather, white sand between your toes and the ocean breeze blowing through your hair! With that being said, here are 3 things ATL Fitness Club suggests you can do to get ready for summer:
1. Work on reducing your body fat.
Obviously if you want to look lean and cut you have to reduce your body fat percentage. This means your diet is crucial (remember, abs are made in the kitchen!). Based on recent research we suggest eating lots of protein (like tuna, chicken, lean steak/beef & of course, ATL Fitness Club protein shakes). You may also want to try eating foods like organic (or Irish) oatmeal, whole grains like brown rice / buckwheat / farro, lots of legumes (like lentils & black beans) and of course, natural or organic peanut butter!
2. Rev up your workout routine. In addition to eating right, the way you work out from now until you hit the beach is super important too. For weight training, be sure to mix up your reps and set schemes often. For example, try doing exercises for 3 sets of 10-12 reps, then after a couple of weeks change it up and do that same exercise for 5 sets of 5 reps. As for cardio, try doing some HIIT ( High Intensity Interval Training ). Just 20 minutes HIIT cardio 5 times a week is said to burn more calories than just doing a boring half-hour on the treadmill or elliptical machine!
3. Avoid eating foods  which could cause you to retain water in conjunction with taking supplements for  that ultimate "shredded" look. To get that super "shrink wrap effect," it is imperative to start preparing at least 6-8 weeks before your deadline (aka: your 1st day on the beach). This is because in order to get that super ripped look, you have to give your skin time to shrink down and stick tight to your body. To  do this, avoid canned foods & frozen meals, which are loaded with sodium and can cause severe water retention. Additionally, try taking pharmaceutical-grade supplements like Vitamin B6, which acts as a natural diuretic for the body. When you can decrease puffiness, you can increase your potential for looking lean & mean during your upcoming sand volleyball match (or just while you're sunbathing on the shore)!
So there you have it. 3 easy ways ATL Fitness Club suggests for you to bust your tail before your upcoming summer vacation. By simply amp-ing up your gym routine , eating cleaner , and avoiding sodium-laden foods you will be well on your way to a "beach bod" in no time.
We'll "sea" you on the shore!

If you're like many of us at ATL Fitness Club and you follow professional athletes in the fitness industry ... then you'll be just as ecstatic as we are about our recent partnership with IFBB Pro Toney " The X-Man " Freeman !

For many of you bodybuilding fanatics... you may already know that Toney Freeman 's nickname is The X-Man because his perfectly chiseled body composition just happens to resemble the X-frame of those who are considered "classical bodybuilding" gods:

In the past, Toney Freeman has been featured on the cover and pages of FLEX Magazine Muscular Development , and MuscleMag .

Web sites profiling Freeman 's success report that he did not become a competitive professional bodybuilder until his late 30s because, for many years, it was simply a hobby and the sport appeared to be dominated by his idols, Lee Haney and Dorian Yates .

Now here's the most important news of all (in our opinion at ATL Fitness Club of course)...

Beginning in May 2013, Toney " The X-Man " Freeman & ATL Fitness Club will embark on a much-needed partnership together in the world of fitness , strength , cardio & nutrition .

" The X-Man 's" new journey with ATL Fitness Club promises to deliver even more nutritional & fitness insight for our members as well as health fanatics who follow us, by:

ATL Fitness Club : "Beaches" Be Like... Summer Vacation is Just Around the Corner!

With summer rapidly approaching.. Your bikini (even as it remains hidden in your underwear drawer) is eagerly anticipating the warmth of your fit physique and the cool refreshing feeling of the ocean breeze and the crisp saltwater. Your bikini's ready... but are YOU “bikini ready”?

That’s the question you may be asking yourself when you open that drawer to retrieve a pair of boy shorts, only to accidentally grab that bathing suit instead...so you try it on.

As you squeeze and twist your way into last season's skull & crossbones (or any other fun printed) number, you and look yourself up and down in your full-length mirror and suddenly it becomes painfully apparent:

Spring has arrived and the summer season is just around the corner (insert exclamatory "Yiiiiiikes!" expression here)!

Well you're not alone... Join the ATLFitness Club crew and all the other health gurus in the Atlanta metro area who are crash-dieting, gulping down workout supplements and bumping up their exercise routines in order to emulate the body compositions of bronze gods & goddesses during the upcoming beach and swimming pool season.

Yes, it’s THAT time of year again-- It’s Beast Mode time!

We at ATL Fitness Club are here to make "getting bikini ready" fun for everyone by encouraging all of you to stay motivated about seeing amazing results with a clean diet, engaging in productive exercise and exceeding your fitness goals. In other words, we are dedicated to helping you " Achieve The Look " (duh!).

So to help you better prepare for your guest appearance on the beach this summer... we as the founders of ATL Fitness Club strongly urge you to heed all of the following 5 suggestions to get in the best shape of your life (since last summer, of course):

1) Set a desired weight loss goal for yourself and post it somewhere (like on your fridge or desk computer) that it will constantly be visible. Whether your goal is to lose 5 pounds or 50 pounds, make sure to monitor your progress by weighing yourself daily (first thing when you wake up, in the buff), and record it each day until you've reached your deadline. Writing down your improvements daily can help you hold yourself accountable for your weight loss goals.

2) Specify a date for when you'd like reach your weight loss goal. If you're like some of us in the ATL Fitness Club you may accomplish way better results when the "gun is to your head" (yes, some of us are horrible procrastinators). Setting an exact date to shed those excess pounds from Easter brunch (and all those other cheat meals) should help keep you focused on your weight loss efforts to get into that yellow polka dot bikini... just like the song!

3) Set a "maximum caloric intake" for yourself and stick to it daily. Not only can counting your calories prevent you from scooping up that handful of Starburst jellybeans from the office candy jar during the week, but you will also be educating yourself about the nutritional value (or lack thereof) in the foods you are regularly eating (who knew there were 21 carbs in just one Krispy Kreme?! Oops.).

4) Find an exercise and/or diet partner so both of you can hold each other accountable. When you have a buddy to meet you at the gym for a tandem workout or someone to simply inquire about what you're eating daily, you will definitely be more conscientious of what you do (and don't do) to get to your "bikini ready" goals.

5) Evaluate your daily and weekly diet, weight loss results and exercise progress with your "accountability partner" and adapt to produce your desired result. Let's say your workout buddy happens to lose 2 more pounds than you in a week. Take note of what he/she is doing differently, try to implement it for yourself, and see if you can meet or beat his/her results the following week! Hey let's face it... a little competition never hurt anybody, right?!

Phewwwww okay... Now that we are hopefully all on the same page, let’s get this party started!

If you need any help customizing a meal plan or even a workout routine to fit your body type and lifestyle just send us an email at admin@atlfitnessclub.com.

ATL Fitness Club | Eating Wholesome, "Grain or Shine!"

Lots of people these days are afraid to eat carbs, which is understandable considering the popularity of the Atkins Diet and all the carb-free products out there on the market.

But here's the deal: it's okay to eat carbs when they're in the form of grains! At ATL Fitness Club we enjoy adding grains to our daily meals in the form of barley, farro, bulgur wheat, couscous, quinoa and even wild rice.

Too good to be true? Check it out-- The USDA recently posted an article on their ChooseMyPlate.gov site that mentions all the benefits of eating grains:

1) Eating grains may reduce your risk of heart disease.

2) Consuming foods with a fiber (such as grains) may help improve regularity and reduce constipation.

3) Adding grains to your meals may help with weight management.

4) Eating products that contain grains means they have folate, which is great for women to have before and during their pregnancy.

We admit, some of you may have never heard of the grains we mentioned, but do some research and you may be able to find these products at stores near you... you just may have never paid attention to them in the past!

ATL Fitness Club has found pearl barley at Kroger, quinoa at Marshall's, whole wheat couscous and wild/brown rice mix at Big Lots, farro at Trader Joe's, and other fun grains to cook at Whole Foods (of course).

For some fun recipes check out the recipe section of our web site by clicking here: Healthy Recipes & Nutritious Meal Ideas .

Ready to eat clean and train mean this week? Let's do it!

ATL Fitness Club 's 3 Reasons Why Sticking to Your Resolution Can Be a Piece of Cake (Figuratively, That is)!

The start of a new year usually means the start of new habits (or the end of old ones). But sometimes (and many of us are guilty of this) setting a New Year's resolution (like losing weight or joining a gym) can seem like a bit of a far-fetched fantasy.

That's why ATL Fitness Club wants to help you stick to your goals in 2013... and every year after that!
Here are 3 good reasons why sticking to your resolution(s) can be a piece of cake (without all the calories)!

1) It only takes 30 days to establish a new habit. Whether your ultimate goal is to lose weight , put on some size , or just learn to eat cleaner and train meaner... your new routine can easily become a permanent lifestyle change over time. Experts say it takes just 30 days to establish a new habit. This means that if you just stick to your guns about going to the gym , eating more healthful foods , or stepping up your training regimen for just one month, you will be one step closer to Achieving The Look you desire. Think of each month as just another stepping stone toward your final destination: FITNESS. As each month passes, you will unknowingly be creating the habit of healthier living. 30 days of hitting the gym, combined with another 30 days of improving your diet, in conjunction with another 30 days of  stepping up your weight training ... equals a quarter of your year filled with small goals but big results!

2) A healthy lifestyle can be contagious. Our ATL Fitness Club team has had the wonderful privilege of writing workout routines, making supplement suggestions, and sharing nutritious recipes & meal ideas with others nationwide. What we've discovered over time is that the more we knowledge we share, the more interest we generate among fitness gurus who desire to Achieve The Look . What a gratifying feeling it is to be able to share your passion with others, right? So why not inspire those around you as well? When people see that you are diligent about your gym routine , and consistent about your eating habits, they will start to ask how they too can live that healthy lifestyle. Whether it's passing along a recipe that you love or showing someone at the gym one of your favorite weight exercises, you can be the one to motivate others around you. You know that saying, "birds of a feather flock together?" Well it's true in this case. By enlightening people to improve their health and fitness, you will also be building a flock of fitness freaks around you who will continually inspire each other each and every day!

3) Getting or staying in shape is much cheaper than the consequences associated with being sedentary. We just watched the documentary Hungry for Change on Netflix, and retained this startling statistic: 68% of Americans are now overweight or obese. Are you kidding?! That means almost 7 out of every 10 people has a weight problem. Carrying those excess pounds has far worse consequences than just not being able to squeeze into your favorite jeans or hating your reflection in the mirror... Being overweight or obese also sets the stage for people to develop a laundry list of medical conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, or cardiovascular problems. Correct us if we're wrong, but we feel as though spending money on gym memberships, personal trainers, and fresh groceries is MUCH CHEAPER in the long run than office visits to the doctor, paying for prescription medications, and buying bigger clothes to hide your love handles. So why not make the wiser investment in 2013... by sticking to your workout plans and improving your diet? We say it's a "no-brainer!"

In a nutshell-- People make New Year's resolutions all time time, but not many people actually stick to them. But if you can make the commitment to rewarding yourself in 2013 with more exercise and wiser food decisions, you won't have just established new habits... you will have created an ideal lifestyle. So what are you waiting for? Begin your 30 days of starting a new habit that's good for you TODAY.

Here's to Achieving the Look in 2013!

ATL Fitness Club Featured Celebrity Trainer: Chris Garcia

Happy New Year, fitness gurus! In light of the most popular New Year's resolutions that we make year after year, we at ATL Fitness Club decided to profile a celebrity trainer who can both help you lose those excess pounds you gained for the holidays, as well as whip you into the best shape of your life.

We're talking about Chris Garcia, owner of Pure Living Fitness gym in Glendora, CA. Chris not only owns his own exercise facility on the west coast, he has also become well known for training celebrities! Additionally, Mr. Garcia recently published the first of his series of ebooks, The Max 21 Fat Burning Routine.

Based on Chris's extensive fitness background, it's safe to say that exercise and optimal health have always been an instrumental part of his life in some capacity.

Garcia’s participation in athletics as a young boy sparked his interest for health and fitness at a very young age. Chris began playing organized youth baseball at the age of five, and continued with the All-American sport into high school. At eleven years of age, Garcia began working out to prepare himself for the rigorous sport of youth Pop Warner Football. Chris’s passion for the pigskin game carried into college, where he played at the collegiate level from 1990-1993. During this time, Chris also began personal training (in 1991) with the general public, emphasizing his knowledge and customized programs which aided in fat loss. Working as a personal trainer helped Garcia realize his natural gift for working with people on improving health, eating right, and getting into better shape.

Also during this time period, Chris began training in boxing. His dedication to the ring led him to become a semi-finalist in the 1995 Golden Gloves Tournament of Southern California. Proceeding his boxing achievements, Garcia went on to coach youth boxing for three years (1997-2000).

In 1996, Chris Garcia broadened his horizons and interest in healthy living by becoming a Nutrition Consultant. Garcia helped others learn to make healthful choices by assisting clients through the famed APEX nutrition program. APEX Nutrition claims to be one of the leaders in online nutrition coaching, while offering nutrition plans for Weight Loss, Diabetes, Heart Health, Pregnancy & Lactation, Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, and Endurance Sports Nutrition. In just a short amount of time, Garcia’s aptitude for nutritional supplements and knowledge of appropriate dietary programs led him to expand his clientele roster. Just one year later Garcia assumed the position of fitness director. His primary role became fitness consulting for City Hall employees for the city of Norwalk.

Garcia also possesses an extensive background in teaching good health to those who thirst for lifestyle improvement as well as weight loss. Chris has taught courses to the Norwalk general public in Nutrition 101, as well as “Developing Your Fitness Training Program” classes. Garcia’s desire for dispersing good health knowledge to people continued in 2000, which marked the birth of Pure Living Fitness personal training in Long Beach, California. Pure Living Fitness afforded Garcia the opportunity to work with college and professional athletes on a regular basis, as well as assist physical therapy outpatients with their recovery processes.

In 2004 Garcia began coaching youth baseball in addition to his roles as personal trainer, nutritional consultant, health instructor, and physical therapy aide. Two years later, Garcia started teaching Organized Outdoor Beach Body Fitness classes in multiple locations across southern California. This led Chris Garcia to eventually become a full-time personal lifestyle coach and nutritional consultant for a multitude of high profile clients. In 2007, Garcia relocated to Atlanta, Georgia to become the personal health advisor for Tyler Perry Studios.

Today, Pure Living Fitness is more than a personal training and nutritional program—it’s a way of living that’s becoming highly contagious among clients who reside anywhere from the west coast to the southeast. Pure Living Fitness continues to gain popularity in health facilities, workout franchise centers, and on the internet. Its primary focus is to compel workout fanatics, fitness gurus, and anyone who is simply interested in losing weight or improving their lifestyles to join the Pure Living Fitness subculture. Garcia hopes to make others aware of the benefits of healthy living, one person at a time.
Chris Garcia’s vision for Pure Living Fitness is to soon expand his focus to childhood obesity. Garcia would love to educate children about the importance of making healthful choices starting at a young age. He would also like to encourage children to get involved with and stay focused on physical activities, and staying in shape through adolescence and into adulthood.

In conjunction with Pure Living Fitness, Garcia currently has several other projects in the works. Garcia plans to have a children’s book series based on nutrition and health, as well as several self-help, diet, and recipe publications.
