Say Cheese! ATL Fitness Club 's 5 Fatty Foods to Avoid

As many of you health nuts know, decreasing your consumption of bad (saturated) fats can help you lower your overall cholesterol.

In fact, the USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans suggests people should have no more than 10% of your daily calories from saturated fats by replacing them with the unsaturated kind.

So ATL Fitness Club has a list for you... of 5 foods that contain more fat than (yes, dare we say it...) a cheeseburger!

Just to put it in perspective, here are the stats from 2 of Americans' favorite fast food joints:

--A quarter pounder with cheese at McDonald's has 12 grams of fat.

--A Whopper with cheese at Burger King has 16 grams of fat.

So here are 5 of the fattiest foods you may want to avoid the next time you go out to eat:

1)Applebee 's Bruschetta Chicken Salad

Sometimes ordering a salad off the menu of your favorite chain restaurant seems like a smart idea, but it can be a diet disaster. This salad not only contains two types of cheese-- but it is loaded with fat... 18 grams to be exact.

2) Cold Stone Creamery 's Cake Batter Ice Cream

It may be a great snack on a hot day, but the nutrition facts that go with this tasty treat are not so cool. A medium-sized scoop of Cake Batter ice cream also has 19 grams of fat. And that's before adding on any toppings!

3) Red Lobster 's Clam Chowder

It's always tempting to start off a meal at a restaurant with a bowl of soup before your main course is served, but not when you're dining at this popular spot. A bowl of creamy New England Clam Chowder at Red Lobster could be a meal all on its own. That's because each bowl also has 20 grams of saturated fat floating in it. That's almost your entire day's worth of fat intake in an appetizer!

4) Pizza Hut 's Meat Lover's Pizza (just one slice)

Pizza parties are always lots of fun, but there are 10 (yes, ten!) grams of saturated fat in just one slice of a large Meat Lover's pizza from Pizza Hut. And while it's hard to stop at just one slice, if you splurge on a second piece of the pie, you'll have taken in your daily allowance of saturated fat for nearly an entire day, in just one meal!

5) IHOP 's Garden Omelette

We all know eggs can be a great way to get your protein in at a meal (even if it's not breakfast), but watch out for this menu item. IHOP's garden omelette may be heavy on the fresh green peppers, mushrooms, onions, and tomatoes, but at 840 calories, it's also heavy on the fat content, thanks to the cheese. This whole omelette (which is way more than one serving by the way) will set you back 26 grams of saturated fat!

Go Nuts (Literally!) with ATL Fitness Club

So if you're into healthful snacks in between meals, you probably know that one of the best foods you can nosh on is a handful of nuts.

That's because they're jam-packed with protein, vitamins, minerals, and even heart-healthy fats.

But which nuts are best (and worst) for you? Here's some helpful info to ensure you make the right choices...

Why eat nuts as a snack in between meals?
A spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics says, "Their mix of omega-3 fatty acids, protein and fiber will help you feel full and suppress your appetite."

Which nuts have the fewest calories?

All nuts are nearly equal in terms of calories per ounce (in moderation, of course!).
The top 3 lowest-calorie nuts at 160 per ounce are:

-almonds (23 nuts; 6 grams protein, 14 grams fat)

-cashews (16 to 18 nuts; 5 grams protein, 13 grams fat);

-pistachios (49 nuts; 6 grams protein, 13 grams fat).

Which nuts should I avoid?
Avoid nuts which are packaged, roasted in oil, are high in sodium, or contain corn syrup. Try eating them raw or dry roasted instead...Or make your own homemade mix (Here's an ATL Fitness Club favorite: raw almonds sprinkled with cinnamon & stevia and roasted in the oven at 250 degrees for about 25 min.).

Other "nutty" info:
Ounce for ounce, macadamia nuts (10 to 12 nuts; 2 grams protein, 21 grams fat) and pecans (18 to 20 halves; 3 grams protein, 20 grams fat) have the most calories -- 200 each -- along with the lowest amounts of protein and the highest amounts of fats.
Macadamias and pecans, however, are still good nuts (since the difference between these and the lowest calorie nuts is only 40 calories an ounce).

Moral of the story:
As long as you're practicing good portion control and not eating nuts by handfuls at a time, any kind of raw, plain nut will give you a good dose of healthy fats and nutrients.

So what are you waiting for? If you're in need of a healthful snack, get crackin' on some nuts!
